Haley Pereira, a good friend of mine and a model that I have worked with quite a few times asked if I could do her a favor and photograph her with some 4 wheel drive Jeeps at the St. John’s River, just in the outskirts of Visalia, CA. I asked my good friend Johnny Lopez if he would like to come along to, he’s also a photographer.

It was in the early autumn and in the late afternoon, so the lighting would be harsh from the west and after talking it over we decided to shoot at an island in the middle of St. John’s River where we would have some shade, also where the local 4 wheelers like to go climb. We all met up on the bank of the river, this time of year it’s dried up and packed the Jeeps with the camera gear and off we went.

We set up one of the Jeeps where we wanted to shoot then me and Johnny set up his AlienBee B1600 Flash Unit with a 35″ foldable octagonal soft box and I had borrowed my friend Jimmy’s Vagabond Mini™ Lithium battery also from Paul C. Buff, Inc.™. I put my PocketWizard on my Nikon D300 and Johnny used one on his Nikon D700 and we were off shooting. The setup worked quite well and it’s great having a studio strobe on location. The Vagabond Mini™ Lithium battery works quite well and it makes a great iPhone charger on the trip home to boot.

The shot was done with a AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED lens which I love! It’s tack sharp and performs Well! Haley makes a photographers job easy and she’s great to work with.
